Osun Youths Vanguard Demands Probe into Alleged Financial Misconduct in Nigerian Red Cross
The Osun Youths Vanguard, a coalition of young advocates with members drawn from various civil society platforms including the Nigerian Red Cross, has issued a formal demand for accountability over alleged financial irregularities within the Osun State Chapter of the Red Cross Society.
In a strongly worded statement released on Thursday and signed by the organization’s Public Relations Officer, Tope Ayeni, the group expressed deep concern over recent reports suggesting corruption and lack of transparency in the disbursement of funds from the national headquarters of the Nigerian Red Cross to its Osun State Chapter.
According to the Vanguard, there are troubling allegations that funds earmarked for the Osun Chapter were either withheld or possibly diverted, with fingers pointing at the current Branch Secretary, Mr. Tolulope Ogunleye. The group claims Mr. Ogunleye may have received funds without informing or consulting the appropriate local structures of the organization.
“We cannot idly stand by while the reputation of this venerable institution is tarnished,” the statement read. “We urgently require an explanation for this alleged misconduct.”
The Vanguard has given the national leadership of the Nigerian Red Cross and the Branch Executive Committee a seven-day ultimatum to address the allegations. Failure to do so, it warned, would result in the matter being escalated to relevant regulatory authorities, including the Ministry of Youth and the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN).
Calling on the Red Cross national body to take decisive action, the statement reiterated the Osun Youths Vanguard’s commitment to transparency, youth integrity, and good governance. It emphasized that organizations tasked with humanitarian service must maintain the highest ethical standards to retain public trust.
“As Osun Youths Vanguard, we remain steadfast advocates for a sane society where corruption is unequivocally condemned,” the group stated. “We will continue to champion accountability to ensure that institutions uphold the values they stand for.”
Efforts to reach Mr. Ogunleye and the national office of the Nigerian Red Cross for comments were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
