JAMB Flags Poor Performance in 2025 UTME As Over 1.5 Million Candidates Score Below 200

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has revealed that more than 1.5 million candidates representing approximately 78% of total examinees scored below 200 in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The alarming statistic was disclosed in a data release published by JAMB on Monday, providing a comprehensive breakdown of candidates' performance in the recently concluded Computer-Based Test (CBT), which was conducted between April 24 and May 5 across various centres nationwide.

Out of the 1,955,069 results processed, only 420,415 candidates (22%) managed to score above 200 out of the maximum 400 points. Even more striking, a mere 12,414 candidates, representing just 0.63%, scored above 300.

The UTME is Nigeria’s standardized entry examination into tertiary institutions such as universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

JAMB, in its announcement, stated that the individual results of candidates would be released later in the week.

“A press conference to announce the individual results of candidates and to facilitate result checking will be held later this week,” the board said.

The widespread underperformance has sparked concern among stakeholders in the education sector, raising questions about the quality of preparation, teaching standards, and broader systemic challenges affecting secondary education in the country.

As the nation awaits the release of individual scores, attention now turns to JAMB’s forthcoming briefing, where further insight into the examination process and future reforms may be revealed.
