NANS Tackles OAU, UNILAG Over Planned Tuition Fee Hikes

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has sent a stern warning to both Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and the University of Lagos (UNILAG) over their plans to hike tuition fees.

NANS, in a statement released by its Senate President, Akinteye Babatunde, has vowed to resist any attempt by these institutions to increase fees, describing the move as unjustifiable and oppressive.

Babatunde condemned the planned hikes, which he says would further burden students and their families during an already challenging economic period.

“This is an unacceptable attack on students’ right to affordable education. We will not sit back and allow Vice Chancellors of OAU and UNILAG, among others, to impose fee increments that are clearly designed to exploit students,” Babatunde said in a press briefing.

According to NANS, the proposed tuition fee increases come at a time when the Federal Government has introduced the Student Loan Scheme, aimed at easing the financial challenges faced by students. Babatunde accused the leadership of these universities of undermining the efforts of President Bola Tinubu’s administration to make higher education more accessible.

NANS has called on President Tinubu to intervene and prevent the proposed hikes, urging him to investigate the actions of the universities’ administrations and take disciplinary measures against those responsible for the increases. The student body has also threatened nationwide protests if the fee hikes are implemented.

“We are calling on the government, parents, and all concerned stakeholders to join us in this fight against unjust and unnecessary fee increments. Education is a right, not a privilege, and we will not allow it to be priced out of reach for the average Nigerian student,” Babatunde added.

The students' association has pledged to organize a series of protests and demonstrations if the universities proceed with the planned tuition hikes.
